oosik:virtual-artifacts:Yup’ik shaman exorcising evil spirits from a sick boy. Nushagak, Alaska, 1890s.Today, Nushagak is known as Dillingham. It is the major hub for the Bristol Bay area. The concept of the “devil” was something already practiced within Yup’ik religion before Russian Orthodox was introduced to the area. Because of this, local tradition was able to easily mix with the imposed religion. This is known as syncretism. Good to know! Thanks :) -- source link
