mirdam-aves:Species | Pheasant-tailed jacanaThe pheasant-tailed jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus) is the sole member of it’s genus, making it monotypic. As all other birds in the jacanidae family, commonly referred to as jacanas, their feet are horrible. They have elongated toes and nails which enable them to walk on their favourite habitat: shallow lakes. When foraging for mostly invertebrate prey (specifically insects and molluscs), they can also be seen wading or even swimming occasionally. Although it’s possible that the behaviour is unintentional, they often ingestfilamentous algae, seeds and plant material when foraging.Photo credits: vaidyarupal (horrible feet), Noor Hussain (breeding plumage) -- source link
