britishdetectives:Vicar Detective Sidney Chambers and Detective Geordie Keating and a baby.I need to get something off my chest here, and the Grantchester fandom being what it is, I trust that a) I am not alone and b) someone will have come up with an explanation for this. Note: I have not read all the books, so maybe there’s an explanation there, too? Anyway, here is my issue:Why has Sidney not already baptized the baby??? This is his best friend’s child, who was in danger of DYING. And Sidney is a good priest. Why would he risk having the child die without baptism?? Why would Cathy risk that? (We know that Geordie is in denial and also has a shaky relationship with religion, so we know that answer.) But aside from being physically prevented by Geordie, why would Sidney not baptize a sick baby? Come to that, why would the child not ALREADY have been baptized? Today, in a culture with less religion and less infant mortality, waiting months is kind of the norm, but it wasn’t in the 1950s, at least according to the anecdotes/parish records I’ve seen.Tl;dr: I watched this episode and became retroactively Extremely Upset that the baby had been in danger of dying unbaptized the whole time. -- source link
