Charles de Steuben’s 1832 painting of the Battle of Tours (sometimes also known as the Battle of Poitiers) in 732 CE. During de Steuben’s time, this event was celebrated because it was seen as a major historical turning point in which Christian Frankish forces turned back Umayyad Muslim attackers, thus preserving Christianity in Europe. More recent historical interpretation has shown that the battle was not quite that important. The Muslim attack into France was more of a raid than an attempt at conquest, and Muslim leaders had neither the desire nor the resources to try to take over Europe.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
