agentjoneser:diaryofhorror:Kairo - Kiyoshi Kurosawa 2001Okay real talk I don’t have much to actually say on this website but this shit right here is my jam. Kairo (Pulse in the U.S., not to be confused with the really shitty remake) is a freaking masterpiece. Obviously it’s creepy (it’s a horror movie), but it’s also deeply psychological in ways that were over a decade ahead of their time. One of the main themes of the film is the ways in which technology and the modern world are changing how we relate to each other, how tenuous our relationships really are and what makes us feel any connection (or lack thereof) to other people. On top of all those ideas (and others) which the film illustrates beautifully, it’s just remarkable to look at. It’s perfectly imperfect; stilted, under-lit (many scenes are shot without any added lights at all, or at least look that way), oscillating between cloying, inky darkness and desolate, toxic daylight, the film is soaked in an atmosphere of fearful loneliness and desperate isolation. If there’s any film from the J-Horror craze of the early ‘00s you ought to see, it’s Kairo. -- source link
