Day 7: Coca The Coca plant grows in the Andes region of South America. It’s first consumption in Perú dates to around 2000BC. It is traditionally used for medicinal purposes to combat fatigue, hunger, thirst, and altitude sickness. Coca has a high calcium content and was/is used as an anesthetic. When I made the trip to Cusco, my mom made sure we drank lots of mate de coca (coca tea) throughout our visit. I reported no altitude sickness at all.
