A version of the Magna Carta, from 1297. This was one of several renewals of the charter, which had originally been issued by King John in 1215. In the original, John promised a number of rights (like trial by jury, an early version of parliament, and habeas corpus) to his nobles in order to stave off a rebellion. Later kings ignored it, causing nobles to rise up again and demand that the king sign a new version. In 1297, King Edward tried to tax his nobles, and they rebelled until he signed this version saying that he would not tax them without their consent. {WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
