jakepanian:This was the very first set I designed when I started at Blue Sky, so it’s kinda special to me I guess. We had just lost a really talented guy named Kyle Mcnaughton, who left for Pixar. Everyone was in a bit of a panic to find someone new, and it seemed like a good opportunity to ask if I could try. It’s what I really wanted to do. I was working as a color artist at the time, and I just asked my art director Mike Knapp, if I could try set design. Pretty much without hesitation he said, “sure” with kind of sly smile on his face. I dunno what exactly he was thinking, but then he threw me into the deep end, such is his style. Which is great, because you learn fast. The first painting, the green one, I did on a Saturday night, because I had to do it on overtime at first, because I was still working as a color artist during the day. When they pitched this set to me it was this place deep in the forest where no human had really ventured to yet. There was this extremely old oak tree that the Jinn (the little people in the film) just kept carving into over generations and generations. It was this kind of special, magical place. As it turned out though, it became Steven Tyler’s stage. haha! It was a lot of fun to work on though!! -- source link
