Japanese Type 99 Arisaka “Last Ditch” Rifle,Towards the end of World War II Japan found itself with American and Allied forces closing in for the kill. As resources became more and more scarce, they were forced to cut corners in the manufacturing of weapons in order to produce more while using less resources. The picture above is a Type 99 rifle that would be an extreme example of this. Sights were fixed and non-adjustable, and crudely soldered into place. Instead of a metal buttplate, the buttplate is wooden and is hammered into place with three nails. The bolt handle lacks a knob and though the photo doesn’t show it, there would have been tool marks all over the receiver and barrel. I am surprised that the metal and stock is finished on this rifle. It also lacks the sheet metal dustcover common with Japanese rifles. The rifle may have been issued with a crude bayonet and a rope sling, rather than a leather or canvas sling. -- source link
