From some places in Granada one can see the mountains of the Sierra Nevada - and they look terribly beautiful. I felt a lot of desire to see this part, and even more, as there was still no snow and I could drive up there. But then, searching for a nice spot to spend the night I found only winter sport centers. The Sierra Nevada is famous for its wonderful winter sport possibilities, but outside the snow season those resorts don’t look very nice. Must say that my Lonely Planet Spain guidebook did not help a lot (it never helped a lot on all of this jurney…) and google… well, you know google…In the end we decided to drive along the southern side of the Sierra Nevada, and this was a very good decision! The curvy street leads you through simply sensational landscapes. The views from every point are marvellous and the street (except the part I show you here) is excellent. You look around and say: wow! And then you drive a kilometre or two more and again the view opens to another spectacular vista. Slowly (or not so slowly) you climb up to heights of 800, 900 metres above sea level, you overlook hills and mountains, look down to valleys…It is a wonderful area, called Alpujarra. The best mineral waters of Spain come from here and if you see the wild nature (most of the area belongs to the Sierra Nevada National Park) you don’t wonder why the water is so good. Even the water from the tap is way better than what Nestlé and other industrial profiteers sell you as “mineral water”. -- source link
