Julia de Burgos was a Latin-American poet. Her interest in feminism, social politics, and Afro-Caribbean ideas were far ahead of her time, and anticipated the works of contemporary feminist and Latino writers. The eldest of thirteen children, de Burgos grew up on a farm in Puerto Rico. She worked as a teacher before becoming a published writer in her early 20s. De Burgos received awards and recognition for her work, and was celebrated by poets like Pablo Neruda, who called her one of the greatest poets of the Americas. She moved to New York City, where she worked as a journalist. Following a difficult divorce, de Burgos fell into depression and alcoholism. She died under mysterious circumstances at a hospital in Harlem. Her body was returned to Puerto Rico, where she was given a hero’s burial. De Burgos has been posthumously honored both in the US and Puerto Rico, was given an honorary Doctorate in Literary Arts, and inducted into the New York Writers Hall of Fame.
