aristoteliancomplacency:bad-grapefruit:aristoteliancomplacency:@toooldforthisshitaki I had the same reaction, and I’m kind of cheesed at the publishers about it. What they really mean is that she’s the first woman to translate it into English and get it published (with a “proper” publishing company).Women have been translating texts like these for as long as we’ve been clawing out our space in academia. But… yeah. There’s still a huge disparity. That part is true.classics is fundamentally an institution built on racism and sexism. in every classics class i have ever been there have been way more women than men yet every time i see something happening in the field it’s a male classicists’ development. my professors admitted that they probably know of only 4/5 classical professors of colour in the entire uk. it’s our job now to change this^ This.My department is primarily women, yet we only just got another woman professor, since the last woman professor retired seven years ago because the uni told us we had to lose a professor so she took early retirement because none of the men would. Seven fucking years and only men professors, despite the department being 80% women. We have one lecturer of colour in our department. (And no professors don’t be stupid)(The English department also has huge issues - what do you mean we can assign literature to study that’s NOT written by cishet white men???) -- source link
