cfbgtips: there’s a type of groupthink out there where we’re expected to be on 24/7 when it concerns social justice. this essentially means being hyper aware of all deaths, injustices, and so forth against black bodies. you know what happened when I was always on? depression. constant mourning and anger. anxiety. hopelessness. and so forth. now I’m not knocking that work. I applaud and admire those who are able to keep us all aware of what’s going on, and being on the front lines of that work as often as they do. what I don’t appreciate is being made to feel guilty when I want to engage in something lighter for like a second. when i just want to laugh for a minute. or if I want to relish in the fact that Janelle Monae shaded the hell out of Iggy Azealia for a moment. if I and others refuse to watch a video of another one of us being murdered in cold blood then that’s our prerogative. we’re maxed out. we all ain’t “sleep”. some of us just need to reaffirm our worth and to make sure we gon’ be alright and not fall into crippling despair and depression every time we get news about our community continuing to suffer systematically, k’thanks; let us live when we need a break. -- source link
