archiemcphee:You won’t need a passport for the next Geyser of Awesome Field Trip. This time we’re headed for Lincoln, Massachusetts, home of a mysterious field full of old rocking horses. Located just outside of Boston, this may be the only rocking horse graveyard on earth. No one seems to know exactly how or why all of these rocking horses first came to be retired in this particular field:“The Boston Globe recounts a number of different stories on how the mysterious rocking horse graveyard came to be. Some residents believe it was originally the site of a lemonade stand, and the rocking horses were a part of the draw. When the lemonade stand left, the horses stayed, baking in the sun alone – until others started coming too.”Over the years more and more horses began to appear. Now a herd of some thirty-odd rocking horses in various styles, states of disrepair and stages of decay sit together in a picturesque field as live animals graze nearby. Our favorite detail about this wonderfully bizarre place is that sometimes the horses move about:“Every so often, locals will see that they’ve been arranged in a circle or other pattern, sometimes resembling carousel horses waiting patiently for riders that will never return. The holidays sees them wrapped in lights, but no one knows who’s carrying out the moving and the decorating.”Now that word of its existence has gotten out, people make pilgrimages to see the rocking horses and share photos online by tagging them #ponyhenge:Tea party at #ponyhenge by @LeeTomaFor more photos and information about the rocking horse graveyard head over to The Boston Globe.Photos by Megan Kate Nelson (via YouTube) and Lane Turner respectively.[via Urban Ghosts and The Boston Globe] -- source link
