My grandfather painted billboards in Hollywood advertising the latest movie releases. My father pain
My grandfather painted billboards in Hollywood advertising the latest movie releases. My father painted translation signs when he was in the Navy stationed in Occupied Japan. When I was in junior high I created signs promoting the student council. Oh well… while my sign making history is far less impressive and interesting than that of my father and grandfather, I still have long been fascinated by the art of lettering, typography and sign painting in general.Sign Painters is a wonderful book in the Brooklyn Museum Libraries & Archives collection published in 2013 that features interviews with 24 artists from around the country who are keeping this admirable tradition alive with some stunning results. Stephen Powers is one of the artists featured in this book. A marvelous installation of his work can be seen in the Brooklyn Museum’s Rotunda Gallery through August 21st.The Brooklyn Museum Libraries & Archives also offers a great selection of books focusing on the art of lettering and typography. Here’s a sampling of titles on the subject: Letters and lettering, designed by Paul Carlyle and Guy Oring101 ornamental alphabets, collected, and with notes, by Raymond Cohn and Michael EstrinThe signist’s book of modern alphabets, plain and ornamental, ancient and mediaeval, from the eighth to the twentieth century, with numerals … Collected and engraved by F.
