workingclasshistory:On this day, 11 October 1946, the British government announced that 1,038 military camps had been squatted in England and Wales by 39,535 people in a wave of occupations of empty properties by ex-servicemen and their families. Over 4,000 people had occupied such camps in Scotland as well. It was part of a huge wave of squatting of empty properties by working class families demanding decent housing after World War II, and forced the government to implement a huge programme of council house building.Pictured: a demonstration of unhoused ex-servicemen and supportersWe only post highlights on here, for all our anniversaries follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wrkclasshistory https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1551415248376953/?type=3 -- source link
