Founded in 1913, the Ghadar Party was a San Francisco-based revolutionary group to overthrow British colonialism in India. Though the Ghadar Party was predominantly Sikh, it had Muslim and Hindu leaders and promoted unity across ethnic and linguistic barriers. Many South Asians came to the West Coast to take jobs in the lumber and farming industries. These immigrants experienced widespread racism and xenophobia in the US. The Ghadar Party provided a community and opportunities to create social and political change. The group published a weekly paper called The Ghadar to spread its message and advocate for revolt against the British. The first issue was published from their San Francisco headquarters in November 1913.As the Party quickly gained supporters across the globe, it also became a threat to British, American, and Canadian government officials. The US gathered data on Indian nationalists and even hired spies to follow Ghadar leaders.Multiple plots were developed to kick off an armed revolution in India. However, each mission was thwarted by government surveillance and infiltration, leading to trials and mass arrests. The Ghadar Party organized thousands against colonialism and white supremacy on a global scale and left a legacy to inspire new generations of radicals. -- source link
