These engravings show the South Pacific islands of Tahiti and Mo'orea. Separated by about 10 miles, both were visited by James Wilson’s 1796-1798 expedition. Wilson was tasked with escorting a party of missionaries and depositing them on a number of major islands in the region. In addition, he also surveyed numerous other minor islands that did not receive missionaries. These two islands are also the setting for Herman Melville’s 1847 novel Omoo. London Missionary Society’s A Missionary Voyage to the Southern Pacific Ocean. London: printed by S. Gosnell, for T. Chapman, 1799.
