In Cherrapunji, northern India, local infrastructure is not built, it’s grown! This amazing bridge is called the ‘Umshiang Double Decker Root Bridge’. By directing the growth of the trees roots, the local War-Khasi tribe were able to create the structures. They are made from the roots of the Ficus elastica tree which produces secondary roots at higher point along its trunk which can attach to boulders or even settle in the river itself. The reason for the secondary roots is due to the sheer size of the trees. At 30-60 metres tall and 20-60 metres wide, it is easy to understand why they may need more support than conventional root systems. The bridge offers routes to the locals that were previously difficult to get to, but these structures are not for those in a hurry; taking 10-15 years to grow!-JeanPhoto courtesy of Raj Kumar -- source link
