Happy birthday to Omar Khayyám ! Born on this day in 1048, this Persian mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher is widely held to be one of the most important scientists of the middle ages. He is also well known for his poetry, which was made widely available to English speaking audiences through Edward FitzGerald’s late 1800’s translation, The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. Though many of the verses were more adaptations than literal translations of Khayyám’s original quatrains, FitzGerald’s version remains the most popular.
