Lena the Hyena, “the world’s ugliest woman”, was a character in Al Capp’s newspaper strip, L’il Abner. To protect readers, she was never shown. Readers though became so curious about her appearance that Capp eventually, in 1946, announced a contest for artists to send in their interpretations. The jury consisted of Salvador Dali, Boris Karloff, and Frank Sinatra.I’ll repeat that in case you think something’s wrong with your eyes: the jury consisted of Salvador Dali, Boris Karloff, and Frank Sinatra.Cartoonist Basil Wolverton won.Carl Barks also submitted a drawing (see image 3). I wonder though if this Lena the Hyena is supposed to be the same as Lena Hyena from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? What are the odds?We have yet to have an official “world’s ugliest man”, but I can think of some. -- source link
