justanaijagirl:before you have a daughter, first make sure you like yourself and your hair and your skin color. otherwise you will annoy her with your insecurities. ..it wasn’t until I became an adult + eventually a mom that I realized how incredibly blessed I was to have grown up in a family who takes so much pride in being black. coming from two completely different cultures– African American and Nigerian culture definitely had its perplexities as the two are completely different. yet I’m so thankful to be both because in total they make me who I am. ..growing up all I can remember from my aunt @msdot especially is how beautiful it is to be black; how our experiences good and bad make us who we are. my mama @terryjenise__itsme taught me the definition of true love through her unconditional love for my sisters and I despite the fact that she didn’t know what love was growing up. and from my daddy how dignified it is to have my grandfather– a Nigerian King’s blood running through my Omogun veins and how no matter what I did or where I went I am a true Edo Nigerian woman who can conquer the world... coming from a family who had gone through, yet still came out on top and raised all of my siblings + cousins with lots of love and pride in not just “who we are” but “Who’s we are” I am honored to pass the baton of self love, self esteem, self preservation, confidence, faith, fearlessness and freedom to my beautiful Haitian, Nigerian AfricanAmerican daughter.
