★ Aug. 11, 2019 Tawaraya-yoshitomi, Kyoto: Gozan-no-mikasa – okuri-bi (lit. Five mountains made with gong pancakes – ‘send-off/farewell’-[bon]fires?)*1 ——– A pack of Japanese cakes commonly known as ‘dora-yaki (gong pancake)’, each with (a) Chinese character(s)/a design 'branded’ on the surface and sweet paste sandwiched between two pancakes. Counterclockwise from lower right: 1) with the Chinese character 'dai(large/big)[-monji]’ and a filling of chunky-type sweet bean paste plus a tiny piece of rice cake, 2) the Chinese characters 'myo-ho (Buddha’s right/wondrous teaching?)’ and chunky-type sweet bean paste plus raisins, 3) the design 'funa-gata (lit. ship-shape)’ and chunky-type sweet bean paste plus raisins, 4) the design 'torii-gata (lit. shrine gate-shape)’ and chunky-type sweet bean paste plus a tiny piece of rice cake, 5) the Chinese character 'dai(large/big)[-monji]’*2 and marmalade. ——– The name of this pack derives from Gozan no Okuribi (lit. 'send-off’ bonfires on five mountains), which is one of the four main festivals held in the city of Kyoto and also one of the city’s main tourist attractions. Originally, however, Gozan no Okuribi is a traditional religious rite to mark the end of the 'obon’ period … and, for some local people, to 'part with’ their loved one(s) who live(s) only in their memory. The event is originally meant to guide the spirits of the deceased who returned to the mortal world during the period – for a family reunion — back to their world. ——– *1 'Mikasa’ is another name for 'dora-yaki (gong pancake)’. *2 Commonly called 'hidari[left]-dai-monji’ in distinction from 1).
