cmog: Object of the Week: Handkerchief Bowl, Roman Empire, 300-399. 97.1.16. A popular form in contemporary glass, the handkerchief bowl was first pioneered by a Roman glass blower more than 1,500 years ago. The ruffled edges that give the handkerchief bowl its name and trademark appearance were created by reheating the vessel in the mouth of a furnace, withdrawing it, and swinging it sharply downward to cause the rim to buckle and fold. -- source link
