★ Sep. 29, 2019 Kawabata Doki, Kyoto: kikka-mochi (chrysanthemum-rice cake) ——– Japanese cake stuffed with strained-type sweet bean paste ‘koshi-an’. ——– Probably, this cake is associated with “Choyo/Choyo-no-sekku (Double Ninth Festival)”, which, in the olden days, was celebrated on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month (or double nine). The festival was also known as “Kiku-no-sekku (Chrysanthemum Festival)”. It was customary for people to, e.g. decorate their rooms with chrysanthemums and drink chrysanthemum wine on that day. ——– Today, the festival is not well known, as compared with “Joshi-no-sekku (so-called girls’ day, also known as Momo-no-sekku)”, “Tango-no-sekku (so-called boys’ day)” and “Tanabata”*. However, it still keeps to the same day in the Gregorian calendar (i.e. September 9). ——– * Held on the 3rd day of the 3rd month, the 5th day of the 5th month and the 7th day of the 7th month respectively.
