Interesting T-34 Tanks in YemenThe T-34 was the workhorse tank of the Soviet Union during World War II with around 84,000 manufactured. After WW2 it was exported around the world and even though it’s a heavily obsolete tank model there are still a handful of countries today which still use it. In fact it is still used on one modern battlefield, the Yemeni Civil War which has been ongoing since 2015. The particular model that has been documented is the T-34-85, an upgraded later WW2 variant armed with a larger 85mm gun, allowing the T-34 to better handle the thicker armor of the German Panther and Tiger tank.In Yemen procuring the ammunition for a T-34-85 is difficult. As a result most ammunition is reloaded using spent shell casings. However you can only reload a spent casing and refire it so many times before the dimensions of the casing warp and lose integrity. Thus the ammunition is unsafe to fire. Some homemade ammunition is also made but is equally unsafe. As a result, Yemeni fighters have found a solution in which a hole is bored through the armor of the turret and a ripcord attached to the firing mechanism. This allows the user to fire the main gun while outside of the tank, just in case a faulty shell should happen to case rupture or explode. -- source link
