allthecanadianpolitics:Black History Month, Canada:Seraphim Joe Fortes was a local hero in Vancouver in the 20th century. He loved swimming and became Vancouver’s first self-appointed, unpaid life guard; he later got an official life guard position. He taught hundreds how to swim and he is credited with saving 29 lives from drowning, but others say that number should be closer to 100. When he died in 1922 his funeral was the most attended in Vancouver’s history. In 1986, the City of Vancouver named him citizen of the century. Canada Post even made a stamp of him during Black History Month in 2013.Read more about Joe Fortes at the links below:Vancouver History: Joe FortesBlack history month a time to remember Joe FortesBlack History Month: Remembering Joe FortesBC Black History Awareness Society: Seraphim Joseph Forteshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Fortes -- source link
