★ Sep. 28, 2019 Kameya-yoshinaga, Kyoto: kise-wata (lit. putting?-floss silk) ——– ‘Konashi’-type Japanese cake with white bean paste ‘shiro-an’ in the center and white 'kinton’ on top. The cake depicts a chrysanthemum flower topped with a 'wad’ of floss silk. ——– In the olden days, there was a festival called “Choyo/Choyo-no-sekku (Double Ninth Festival)” or “Kiku (Chrysanthemum)-no-sekku (Festival)” on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month (or double nine). It was apparently customary for people to celebrate the festival using the plant/flower – e.g., to decorate their rooms with chrysanthemums and drink chrysanthemum wine. (Today, the festival is not well known, although it still keeps to the same day in the Gregorian calendar (i.e. September 9).) ——– “(Kiku-no-)kise-wata” was one of the customs related to the “Kiku-no-sekku.” People 1) put and left a 'wad’ of floss silk on a chrysanthemum flower (= covered the flower with a small mass of the fine soft threads) throughout the night before the festival, and then 2) wiped their bodies with the 'wad’ with lingering scent of the flower and wet with dew, on the morning of the event. ——– A theory states that the chrysanthemum was originally introduced (from China) as a medicinal herb for perpetual youth, health and longevity. Apparently, by wiping their bodies with a 'wad’ of floss they believed contained the plant’s medicinal properties, people wanted to achieve these 'eternal wishes of humankind.’
