greek-museums:Archaeological Site of Eleusis:An important part of the sanctuary was this grotto known as Ploutonion, which was dedicated to Pluto. The grotto was the first site of worship in Eleusis and at the time of the Eleusinian Mysteries it was believed to be a connecting point between the underworld and the world of the living. The site has been recently “reclaimed” by believers of hellenic polytheism who gather at the site to perform certain rites and make offerings.I don’t know how the Ephorate feels about it, but I feel pretty negative. The sanctuary of Eleusis is an extensive site, where it is acceptable to walk practically everywhere, however it has been proven that the hill it is built around is becoming unstable and pretty much every walkable surface around the hill is supported by ancient foundations. There are certain wooden paths and steps to guide the visitor, but it feels like there are no up to date safety guidelines for touring the site and not enough guards to monitor the activity of the guests.Certain concerts and performances take place at the “theater” of the sanctuary, and it seems to me that the municipality is also “renting” the site to the polytheists for their reconstructions in order to cover maintenance costs. That might be okay because these activities are planned for and there are boundaries. But I feel like at some point anyone will be able to come and engage in reckless behaviour. -- source link
