solacekames:decadentbrownwonderland:People who come for sex work don’t understand capitalist society is what made it possible for it to exist in the first GD place. But whatever.A lot of SWERFs in the comments completely missing the point, ugh. There’s also a specific set of behaviors required (for adults, any sexual exploitation of a minor is considered trafficking) to meet the legal definition of trafficking: force, coercion, and/or fraud. These are the standards used by law enforcement, attorneys, social workers and therapists, and forensic interviews who work specifically with victims of sex trafficking. My husband works in SVU (child crimes, but he also works with some adult victims of sexual assault or trafficking through task forces and because many child sex trafficking rings also traffic adults). He is on state and federal joint task forces devoted to trafficking and sexual exploitation. He had participated in stings designed to catch sex traffickers. He is currently participating in his second academic study (as a researcher) on the topic of public perception of sexual trafficking victims. We talk about the differences between sex work and trafficking on a regular basis, because it’s about a quarter of his life at the moment. To him, a professional who deal with the topic from two angles (acadmemic and legal), the distinction is pretty clear. One thing he says on a regular basis is “I’m not here to work Vice. I’m here to stop trafficking.”Mislabeling all sex work as trafficking hurts consenting sex workers but also hurts legitimate sex trafficking victims by minimizing and normalizing the impact of force, coercion, and fraud. Legalizing consenting sex work protects trafficking victims by keeping the lines clear (particularly important when prosecuting sex traffickers!) Criminalized sex work + “all sex work is trafficking” = literally criminalizing people for being trafficked. -- source link
