thearkenstoneandtheacorn:I find these moments so sad because all they do for me is serve to highlight how Thorin would’ve been a lot like Fili and Kili at one point and what it must take: to take someone like Kili and turn them into someone like Thorin, how terribly they must’ve suffered. And I also think about the fact that while they’re fighting Smaug in DOS: Thorin - who’s always been very serious about fighting - 1) uses a wheelbarrow to sail down a river of gold, 2) taunts a fucking dragon to light forges, 3) launches himself into the air and whizzes up and down a mineshaft, and 4) builds a giant gold statue to bury Smaug. He suddenly becomes this crazy action hero pulling all these wild stunts Captain-Jack-Sparrow style, and I think about the fact that - before the dragon sickness really kicks in - that’s how reclaiming erebor affects him: it makes him confident, dashing, charming, funny, risk-taking, charismatic, playful, and above all, SELF-CONFIDENT - because you actually see him happy. -- source link
