Not that they needed validation from me, but the original Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are so, so great. . I just gave them a proper watch, one for the first time in 15 years and the other pretty much for the first time ever. Bright, colourful stories taking place in a New York that feels discernibly real, from every tablecloth fabric to peeling wallpaper to diverse street corner. Every facet of these films has a story to tell, and at their center is the everlasting struggle between doing what makes us happy and doing what’s right. . Tobey Maguire may not be the fast-talking Spidey of the later comics, but he embodies the idea of Peter Parker in the kind of operatic way that perfectly reflects his ‘60s origin. The films aren’t even that old, but they feel like relics of a simpler, more innocent time. Which is probably why they struck the way they did in the months following 9/11, one of the darkest periods in recent history. . There was a time in my more cynical teenage years when I would’ve labeled them “cheesy” and rejected them wholesale, but they’re every bit as pulpy and honest as they need to be, not to mention undeniably iconic. . From the upside-down kiss in the rain told from MJ’s perspective, to “I believe there’s a hero in all of us,” these films are downright iconic as well as sincere pleas to goodness and heroism, and I’m glad I can finally appreciate them the way they deserve. . Spider-Man is, and probably always will be a mainstay of popular culture going forward, and Sam Raimi’s first two films are the reason why, making real dreams of flying while reminding us of simple lessons that so many of us took forward from our childhoods. . “With great power, comes great responsibility.” -- source link
