vonrestorffeffect:Adolf WölfliSwiss painter born in Bern. He lived a difficult childhood, had a family history of abuse and was admitted to the Waldau asylum in 1895 as a schizophrenic and criminal with highly violent behavior. During his confinement in the psychiatric hospital, he had intense hallucinations and began to draw, and despite having very limited material, he only had a few pencils and notebooks, he created hundreds of drawings. His artistic production is characterized by its intensity, complexity and eccentricity. A modeling dominates your work that covers every millimeter of the paper without any free space. In his creations he not only uses images but also incorporates his own spelling and musical signs, which go beyond the mere decorative aesthetic presence since it is a true musical notation that corresponds to his own musical compositions. Many of his works were made for other residents, visitors or staff of the center in exchange for paper, colored pencils, tobacco, etc. From 1907 it was in charge of the psychiatrist Walter Morgenthaler, who noticed the artistic quality of his patient, and how art became his only means of communication with the world. He observed how his patient was freeing himself of his burdens, putting them on paper through the creative process, which allowed him a calm to his suffering. Morgenthaler is considered, therefore, a pioneer in the use of art as a tool for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. -- source link
