When Circassians Refugees came to Raqqa, Syria around the turn of the twentieth century they searched for bricks to build houses. In the process, they unearthed not only the masonry of Raqqa’s once magnificent medieval Islamic architecture but also its ceramics, buried since the thirteenth century, when the city was destroyed by invading Mongol armies. See examples of these unearthed ceramics, pulled from the Brooklyn collection and on view in Syria, Then and Now: Stories from Refugees a Century Apart. -- source link
