Guess what?? Guess what, anon??? YOU’RE RIGHT, YOU DO NEED TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF CREATURE MY TUMBLR DP IS. I mean, no, you absolutely don’t, what a useless piece of information, but it is at least something that I recognize as… needing an explanation, in all its lack of self-evidence. AND THUS YOU SHALL HAVE ONEIn 2013, I made this post on my Les Miserables sketch blog, @playthatsadtrombone. The joke is that (…AND BEAR WITH ME HERE, THIS IS TOO CONVOLUTED TO BE FUNNY) 1. Joly’s nickname-in-passing, Jolllly, is predicated on a French pun about being able to fly away on four “L”s (ailes, wings), and: 2. In the series Azumanga Daioh, which this post crosses LM over with, Chiyo’s pigtails are imagined to give her the occasional power of flight.“Chiyo’s Father” in the series is, for reasons that are gloriously unelaborated upon, a mostly ellipsoid cat-adjacent figure with an unerringly fixed expression. This crosses over with LM again in the second picture on the post, because in Volume 3, Book 4, Chapter 5 of LM, Marius Pontmercy gets dunked on by a bunch of hot young radicals (one of whom is Joly) for being a politically confused centrist; the punchline there is “Citizen, my mother is the Republic”. Hence, “Chiyo’s Father” (or “Joly’s Mother”, in this case) is dressed as Marianne, the personification of the French Republic, in Phrygian cap and cockade. That’s, you know…………………………………. how it is. My condolences to you for having incited this entryOh no!!!!!! THIS IS TOO NICE!!! IS MY ROOF GOING TO CAVE IN ON ME? HOW WILL THE UNIVERSE EVEN THINGS OUT. Even though I am wholly unworthy of this miraculous crystalline message, what you experience is really just a testament to your capacious willingness to let yourself be moved– so all snaps should be directed towards your own enlarged heart, leave me out of it, please. Whether or not I should receive credit for any of this (hint: I shouldn’t), I’m still glad that all of it led to you feeling excited about writing again! I am well (for a given value of well, but I am certainly not unwell, and fortunate to be able to say so)– I hope you’re well too, and I hope you’re writing with abandon!Thank YOU for the questions, you enabler! There’s something about you linking those qualities of writing to the category of “slice of life” that makes me wonder if you are someone who is asking me questions on tumblr instead of over Discord, but HONESTLY I’M PROBABLY SLIGHTLY MORE COHERENT OVER TUMBLR POSTS JUST BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF PREMEDITATION INVOLVED, SO WHAT I MEAN TO SAY IS, YOU’RE AN ENABLER AND I AM VERY GRATEFUL THAT YOU ASKED THOSE QUESTIONS HEREThat’s a good distinction to draw, between a word “not belonging to the whole story” and “not belonging to the scene”– what it teaches me is an important lesson about the value of modulating tone over the course of a fic! Like, I feel that I write myself into a corner a lot of the time, because the longer and deeper I get into a story, the stiffer and more prosaic my writing becomes– and I have to wrench myself out of that by reminding myself that I’m allowed to write looser, with a lighter touch! Tone is, I think, a part of it; not every section of a story needs to belong to the same emotional register with the same linguistic environment! In fact, it would benefit the story for that NOT to be the case! Variety is great! I gotta shake myself free of some of my mannerist tendencies, periodically. This is a great helpful reminder! -- source link
