On March 6th – just two days from now – the Democratic presidential debate will take place in Flint, MI. This could be a chance for voters like you and me to push the candidates to have a much harder-hitting conversation about the issues that impact communities of color. For months now the eyes of our nation have been trained on the water crisis in Flint, a predominantly Black city where thousands of residents were heavily exposed to lead contaminated water for more than two years due to outright negligence by local, state, and federal authorities. This week’s debate, set against the backdrop of Flint, demands more than just a few talking points about racism and environmental injustice.Unfortunately the Flint water crisis is not an anomaly. It is happening in dozens of other low wealth communities of color, specifically Black and Indigenous communities that have been subjected to polluted air, poor infrastructure, and toxic dumps along with complete ignorance from their state and local officials. As aspiring presidential candidates who are vying for the votes of people of color, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton must center the needs of the Flint community and provide solutions to the increasing environmental, climate and racial injustice in Flint and other communities across the country.Join 18MR – and 17 other organizations – to demand that this week’s debate focus on racial, climate, and environmental justice at the March 6 presidential debate! -- source link
