iowawomensarchives:When sculptor and print maker, Elizabeth Catlett came to the University of Iowa to study under Grant Wood in 1938, black students were not allowed to live in campus housing. Last week, the University named their newest residence hall in her honor. Catlett was the first black woman to receive an MFA from the University of Iowa and went on to have a distinguished career as an internationally recognized sculptor. The above photograph, of Catlett’s graduation from the University of Iowa, is housed in the Shirley Briggs papers and available to researchers at the Iowa Women’s Archives. -- source link
