During production, studio boss Darryl F. Zanuck sent out a memo describing what the picture was missing: “sex and showmanship”:
[…] “I have given a great deal of thought today to the new sequence in the cave which we discussed last night. It is not only essential from the standpoint of footage but I believe it will give an amazing change of pace to the picture; it will give us a different kind of scene and it can be loaded with sex and showmanship.
