Scene from a palaestra. A teacher, named Linos by the inscription, holds a papyrus roll; his pupil, named Musaios, holds writing tablets. The scene may be an allusion to mythology; Linos (Linus) was a famed musician, son of Apollo (or Oeagrus) and the Muse Calliope, and teacher of both Heracles and Orpheus, while Musaios was considered one of the first great poets and a source of oracular wisdom. Tondo from an Attic red-figure cup, attributed to the Eretria Painter; ca. 440-430 BCE. Now in the Louvre. -- source link
