Tarry iceWhile this photo (with person for scale) might remind us of swirling bits of moraine in flowing glacial ice, sadly it depicts another aspect of our insatiable thirst for energy with which to power our ever growing pile of mostly useless junk (including I know the laptop on which I write this). In the Canadian province of Alberta tar sands are heated and have their oil extracted, leaving behind a big mess, including these swirls of bitumen, the hard sticky residue that remains of oil once the volatiles have been extracted.
