damnitwhatisthecatdoing:fleetwoodfrickfrack:Oh my god please shut the fuck up, privilege doesn’t mean that you don’t have problems literally no one is saying thatIt means you benefit from a SPECIFIC privilege within regards to a certain set of traits you possess or social groups you fit into So while this guy might benefit from straight privileged or white privilege, you know what this man wouldn’t have? Class privilege It’s pretty fucking basic and easy to comprehend. This man being homeless does not mean that straight white cishet privilege doesn’t exist don’t be a fuckin idiotFactors that do exist, that this man definitely has: white privilege, male privilege, possibly cis and straight privilege.Privileges he definitely does not have: class privilege, wealth privilege.Privileges he might also not have, that we can not immediately see on a person: straight privilege, cis privilege, mental ability privilege(as in, not being mentally disabled or sick), physical ability privilege(as in, not being physically disabled), general good health privilege(as he is not able to maintain his health like this, even without a disability he will have health problems that puts him at a disadvantage when looking for work. especially for elders, health can be a factor that makes it hard to compete in a satiated working class job market). So people that talk about having and not having privileges, are not saying that the world is automatically easier to navigate for the random white homeless person in the streets, compared to themselves - as there are plenty of privileges and lack of privileges that are in fact not physically visible on a person. If I say that able-bodied and able-minded people have privilege, and that ableism is bad - that is hopefully to support disabled people, isn’t it? And you can’t see on that picture whether that person has any disability or not. Nor can you actually know whether that person is really cis or straight - you just assumed they are, and that exactly is one of the problems with privilege coupled with ignorance. So don’t just assume that the privilege discussion and the language used about the topic does not work to the advantage of the random white homeless person you see in the street. The reasons they are homeless might very well be connected to the topics that are being adressed in the discussion about the relationship between privilege, prejudice and the marginalization of various groups of people. -- source link
