justslowdown:Wolfdog misrepresentation has real-life consequences. Many, many dogs have not been this lucky and were euthanized before they had a chance. And rescue is just the start.Dogs can be confiscated if somebody makes an accusation that they’re part wolf in an illegal county. They can be euthanized if they bite someone, because of the grey area wolfdogs are in legally when it comes to rabies. People can go into adopting a real wolfdog unprepared, because “My friend has one and she just acts like a husky, I can handle one.”Every time someone claims their northern breed or German shepherd mix is part wolf without 1. documented wolfdog lines behind them, and/or 2. DNA testing, and/or 3. a phenotype evaluation by experts in the field, then they’re perpetuating these issues. You might say “What’s the harm?” Furthering the myth that any vaguely wolfy looking dog has wolf content, therefore shaping public perception, is getting dogs killed and confiscated.Sincerely, someone with husky mixes who’s tired of explaining to strangers that no, there’s no wolf in them, yes, I’m sure, and no, a wolfdog isn’t going to behave the way my dogs do. -- source link
