On the curator’s desk this afternoon: a carving of the “mercy seat” that rested on the Ark of the Covenant, as described in the Book of Exodus in the Hebrew Bible. According to the biblical account, the winged cherubim, made from hammered gold, were facing each other on the cover of the Ark. This carving was made by Bryn Athyn sculptor Thorsten Sigstedt in the 1940s. He interpreted the cherubim as being male and female, a married couple.
