Thomas Edison’s patent for the light bulb, 1880. The basic concept for the light light bulb had been invented long before Edison – in 1761, Ebenezer Kinnersley had shown that you could heat a wire until it produced light. Edison’s breakthrough was to make the light bulb affordable and long lasting enough to be practical in people’s homes.
