“Pancho” Villa and staff, 1911. Villa became one of the most powerful figures in northern Mexico during the Mexican Revolution of 1911-1920. Known as the “centaur of the north,” he fought against Venustiano Carranza and, at times, against American soldiers as well. When the war came to an end, Villa found a way to retire and withdraw from politics.
