A drawing of a proposed people-moving pneumatic system devised by Alfred Eli Beach in the late 1860s. Beach built a one-block prototype of the system in New York, and promised that a city-wide system would be able to carry people across the city in about 20 minutes. He said that a pneumatic system would be less jarring than other systems, and that “the pneumatic system appears to be admirably adapted” to major mass transit. -- source link
