1594 artwork by Theodor de Bry, entitled “Some of the Indians are Killed, while Others Die in the Fire.” This depicts what was unfortunately a very common scene in the 1500s, as Spanish conquistadors attack a Caribbean village. From the very first landings of Columbus, many European “explorers” made clear their intention to exploit the lands and peoples they encountered for selfish gain. Efforts to learn from or cooperate with Native Americans were few and far between. -- source link
