Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager’s Studio 54 opened its doors on April 26, 1977 to over 5,000 people clamoring for a spot inside, thanks to promoter Carmen D’Alessio and her extensive, star-studded mailing list. Despite the crowd’s protest, only 720 of those people—including celebrities such as Liza Minelli, Salvador Dali, and Cher—were allowed to enter the world about to be known as Studio 54. The highlight of the evening was the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s iconic opening performance, for which renowned Puerto Rican fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez created over 50 costume sketches in his signature style. For this year’s anniversary of the Studio 54 opening party, we partnered with Ailey II to recreate some of this magic here at the Museum.Posted by Gina VasquezJuan Ramos (American, born Puerto Rico, 1942-1995).
