justcallmebuttlord:stealthboy:people make decisions every single day that lead to disease. do you also not feel bad for someone with cancer or diabetes or heart disease because their lifestyle had contributing factors?Substance abuse does not happen in a vacuum. It happens in the context of a person’s life, their friends, their enviroment, their neurochemistry, and their society. Addiction, a facet of substance abuse, does not occur in a vacuum either. Every individual uses for the first time in a situation that is unique to them and their circumstances, and to make a sweeping statement like ‘I don’t feel bad for anyone who knowingly took an addictive substance’, suggesting that you believe that many addicts somehow deserve what they got, is not just an asshole statement. It might very well be the asshole statement of my fucking year. No one deserves to be addicted. No one deserves to have their brain crying out for the thing that’s killing them as if it will die without it. No one deserves to suffer, and refusing sympathy or empathy to people who are actively trying to get their shit back together and recover is such a weird fucking flex I can’t even fucking get my head around it. Shit like this smacks of the whole moral facet from the ‘war on drugs’ BS that failed miserably in the US– that people who suffer addiction are just those people and those people are bad people and so we don’t have to think of them as people anymore, and leave them out of that really white-washed ‘perfect picture of society’ certain idiots were trying to make at the time. Welp, I got news for ya– looking down on people who are fighting addiction doesn’t make you a better person. You are not superior, you are a massive sack of shit, and if you gotta punch down on people fighting addiction and working their asses off towards recovery, you’ve broken through the bottom of the barrel to chill in the sewer. Enjoy that. -- source link
