In the early 1900s, a number of South Asians - Sikhs in particular - immigrated to the Pacific Northwest seeking lumber mill work. White laborers in Bellingham, WA blamed South Asians for “stealing” the jobs they felt entitled to. On September 4, 1907, a mob of 500 white people raided South Asian homes, beat people, and stole their property. The local police even helped by rounding up hundreds of South Asians and holding them in the City Hall for their “protection.”Within days, Bellingham’s South Asian community was wiped out. This riot was part of a larger campaign of terror waged by white people against Asian immigrants of all kinds up and down the West Coast. We remember this moment to honor our Asian immigrant ancestors who survived and resisted white supremacist violence. -- source link
